Covell built this house in 1885. Isabella made it famous, running her steakhouse out of it for 40 years. Somewhere in between us there was some restoration. Now it's mine.
I've lived in this town my whole life, so I'm not a stranger here, and neither is this house. People around town still remember and tell me often. The dinners they ate here when it was a steakhouse. The dancers who came after midnight. The secrets the rooms still hold. I love listening to the stories.
I don't think of myself as the owner of Ma Winton's House. I think of myself as the current chapter. Houses like this don't get finished. They get kept — and they have to be kept up. Someone built it. Someone made it famous. Others held it. Someone restored some of it before me — and I'm working to keep it up, one room at a time, because a house this old is never really done.
Some things go back. Some things go forward. Both can be right.
